“The first cultural device was probably a recipient. Many theorizers feel that the earliest cultural inventions must have been a container to hold gathered products and some kind of sling or net carrier.”

Ursula K. Le Guin

The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction

“Design of the Anonymous” opens an experimental space in the form of an inflatable bag as an immersive, walk-in space for individuals to engage with objects, materials, bodies, and narratives. Numerous bags stitched together form walls that form a garment as a third skin, a tent, and create a collective body space. If the small space of a travel bag expands into a space encompassing many bodies, a space of action emerges in the physical and symbolic sense, a space of showing and exchanging. We find ourselves in a bag and open our bags. Told stories are carried on and projected onto the tent skin, letting people speak who have already moved on. Thus, in this social narrative and experiential space, even people who have never met physically meet. The design of the anonymous is anonymous in that it is not based on any single authorship, perhaps not even so much on a multiple one, because it asks other questions. It needs the materiality of the simple bag material we all know. This becomes the mediating membrane and the carrier material of projections and ideas. And yet this design is not material. It is ephemeral and physical, near and far, imagined and real, intangible and touching.
